The St. Bernard originated in the Western Alps, along the border between present-day Switzerland and Italy. The breed’s development is closely tied to mountain hospices and the needs of travelers crossing the treacherous passes. Monastic communities, most notably the hospice at the Great St Bernard Pass (Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard), bred and trained large, powerful dogs capable of withstanding cold, navigating deep snow, and locating people buried by avalanches or lost in storms.
